Div 2 Men Unlucky to Lose 3-1 at Byron

13/9/2012

Individual mistakes cost us the win at Byron Bay, where we dominated long periods of the game.
The first half started with Byron in the driver’s seat, having a lot of possession without clear chances though.
The 1-0 to Byron came from a weak shot off an unmarked player that just made its way over the line. On another day, this would have been an easy save.
After that, our passing started flowing a little better, and chances came. Matt’s shot just cleared the bar and another was cleared off the line. A corner just needed a tap-in, but was missed by all.
Another individual mistake made us lose the ball in the backline in the middle of the park, and Byron counter-attacked and managed to score with a free player. A real flattering scoreline for Byron – 2-0 at halftime.
The second half then had only one team playing – the Valleys. Roared on by the plentyful support that had made their way from the North of the Shire to the CBD, we had about 85% possession of the ball and camped in Byron’s half. Finally, mid way through the half, Tavis made it through the middle and scored with a low shot past the keeper to give us the overdue goal.
The pressure on Byron mounted, and attack after attack rolled towards their goals, with corner after corner the only rewards. The keeper made the best save of the season to clear a shot for a corner. Then Paddy hit the post, someone else the crossbar, Matt put a header over and someone cleared another ball off the line. It was just one of those nights.
The sucker punch was dealt 10 minutes from the end – we lost another ball in the backline without pressure, which made it easy for the Byron player to round the keeper and make it 3-1. We were out, but not down.
Well done to the boys, who started as a Division 3 team, and made it to the top three in Division 2. What a great season!
